Our first, practice harvest of the season – like everything else this season, a couple weeks later than usual.
Its me, heading out to move the irrigation, a constant job!
New this year – purple kohlrabi (as well as gren) – pictured here next to my thumb for size comparison. We will start picking these soon – around golf ball sized & larger; then continue harvesting them for several weeks.
A kohlrabi bed – kohlrabi is crunchy and watery, similar to the stem part of broccoli shoots.
It looks like the Pak Choi will be ready for the 1st harvest. These few that were outside the row cover have a good bit of flea beetle damage (our worst pest), but I’ve noticed their numbers seem to be shrinking recently.
The view under the spun fabric row cover, the flea beetles can’t make it in here and these are much cleaner looking – these will go in the 1st CSA box!
Someone is eating the (green romaine) lettuce – you can see all the outer leaves are munched – probably a rabbit living nearby is doing this, and the inner leaves so far are fine, so we may still get nice heads off these plants yet (other areas aren’t affected)
These red lettuce are in the same bed as the previously pictured green lettuce – apparently the rabbit doesn’t like eating red lettuce. These will be in the 1st boxes!
The raspberries are doing great and are loaded with fruit – fruit members should expect berries this summer.
